DALY CITY, Calif. -- Senior Ramie Sprinkling fired a 3-under 69 on Friday, freshman Tyler Raber carded a 70 and the UC Davis men's golf team shot a 3-under 285 to move into a tie for 10th after two rounds at the NCAA Division I West Regional at Lake Merced Golf Club.
The Aggies, who opened the 54-hole tournament on Thursday with a 10-over 298, improved by 13 strokes in the second round and are tied with Oregon State at 7-over 583.
The top five teams and highest-placing individual not on an advancing team qualify for the NCAA Finals at Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio on May 26-30. Fourteenth-ranked Arizona State continues to lead the 13-team regional, moving to 22-under.
Oregon, ranked No. 35, is in second place at -16, San Diego is third at -10, 12th-ranked Texas A&M is fourth at -9 and second-ranked USC is fifth at -7. Jesper Kennegard of Arizona State shot a 4-under 68 on Friday to take a three-stroke lead over first-day leader Matthew Giles of USC.
UC Davis, which won its first-ever Big West Conference Championship last week and is ranked 26th, had two players go below par and no score above 74 during its round at the 6,849-yard layout on Friday.
"I thought we played a solid round," said coach Cy Williams. "It wasn't a spectacular round but it was solid."
Sprinkling helped lead the way by picking up six birdies against just three bogeys, moving to 3-under after his first nine holes and then adding three more over his final six. He is in a seven-way tie for 35th at 1-over 145. Among those he is knotted with is Raber whose 70 was five shots better than his opening-round score.
Raber, from Davis High School, had three birdies on his front nine but made the turn even. One shot over par after 13 holes, Raber caught fire down the stretch by picking up three birdies over his last five holes including the par-5 9th, his closing hole.
Senior Nate Pistacchio and junior Brent Booth each shot 73 on Friday, carding three birdies each. Pistacchio had two straight - and three over a four-hole span - to help him finish 1 over while Booth had two of his on his front nine. Pistacchio is tied for 42nd overall while Booth is tied for 68th.
Sophomore Austin Graham posted his second straight 74, highlighting his round with two birdies and an eagle-3 on the par-5, 496-yard 14th. He's tied for 56th.
"They're going to go out there and compete tomorrow," said Williams. "They know they're a lot better than (Thursday's score). Tomorrow we'll go out and give it another good shot."
UC Davis is appearing in its first NCAA Championship tournament since finishing as a Div. II member in 2003. The Aggies will tee of the final round beginning at 9:20 a.m.
