DAVIS, Calif. - The UC Davis softball team swept a Big West Conference doubleheader with Pacific (15-21, 0-5 Big West) Saturday afternoon at La Rue Field. The Aggies scored a run in the first inning of game one that held up in a 1-0 victory. UC Davis (18-16, 3-2 Big West) trailed game two by the same score until scoring seven runs late in the game for a 7-1 win. Jessica Hancock had a four-hit shutout, and Kelly Harman had two doubles and three RBIs on the day.
In the first game, Hancock (11-8) struck out six and walked just one batter on her way to her fifth shutout of the season. Three of the hits came in the first two innings. Pacific put two on with one out in each of the first two innings, but Hancock was able to pitch out of both jams. The senior did not allow another hit until two outs in the seventh.
Julie Stauder scored the game's only run. Pacific outhit UC Davis, 4-3. Belinda Paine, Erin Emde and Sarah Axelson each had singles for the Aggies.
Pacific took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first of game two and held the advantage into the bottom of the fifth. That's when UC Davis scored three runs to take the lead. Stauder singled to drive in Michelle Espiritu with one out to tie the game at 1-1. After an error helped prolong the inning, Harman doubled to drive in Bianca Castillo and Caitlin Low.
In the sixth, UC Davis scored four more runs. Paine had an RBI-single, and Emde later added a two-run single to make it 6-1. Harman capped off the scoring with another double that drove in Emde. In all, five of the Aggies' seven runs were unearned.
Paine went 2-for-3 in the second game to extend her hitting streak to 14 games. Each team had seven hits in the game.
Alex Holmes picked up the win after six innings of work. She allowed seven hits with four strikeouts. She did not walk a batter and improved to 7-8 on the year. Nicole Kociemba retired the side in order in the seventh.
UC Davis and Pacific will conclude their three-game series Sunday with a single game at noon. The Aggies' annual alumni game will follow.
