Final Stats
STANFORD, Calif. - Sophomore midfielder Jacklyn Taylor scored a career-high five goals, including the equalizer and game-winner midway in the second period, to lead fifth-seeded UC Davis to a 16-14 upset over fourth-seeded Denver in the quarterfinal round of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women's lacrosse tournament at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium Thursday evening.
The Aggies improve to 6-10 for the season. The Pioneers, ranked as high as No. 19 during the regular season, fall to 10-7 overall.
Taylor, who shot 5-for-7 in recording her first hat trick of the year, hit an eight-meter attempt with 13:27 remaining in the second period to tie the score at 13-13, then converted an assist from Christina Corsa three minutes later to put UC Davis ahead for good.
Junior Britt Farquharson added four goals for the Aggies, while Corsa and junior Molly Lapolla each contributed two goals and two assists. Sophomore Gina Hoffmire chipped in two goals and junior defender Molly Peterson had one for UC Davis.
Senior midfielder Karen Morton led DU with five goals, with Steph Coyne and Tulley Stapp providing three more apiece. Morton also led all players with three assists for the day.
UC Davis only trailed briefly during the entire contest. Lapolla had two eight-meter goals in a 3-1 Aggie start, but Coyne assisted Morton on back-to-back scores that pushed the Pioneers to a 4-3 edge. Some 43 seconds later at the 7:09 mark, Farquharson converted an eight-meter shot to the tie the game at 4-4, then hit another to ignite a 3-0 UC Davis run.
Morton and junior Lexi Sanders each tallied a goal and assist in a 3-0 Denver run to tie the game at 9-9 at halftime, then the Aggies pushed ahead to a 12-10 lead by the 34th minute. Stapp scored consecutive goals in the 38th and 39th minute to knot the contest at 12-12, then Coyne capitalized on teammate Jenn Moore's steal with a go-ahead goal at 44:41.
Again, the Denver lead lasted less than two minutes, culminating with Taylor's equalizer in the 47th minute and game-winner in the 50th. Corsa and Farquharson each scored goals down the stretch to help the Aggies close out the victory.
Farquharson and Taylor also enjoyed outstanding games besides their offensive contributions, posting draw controls of eight and five, respectively. Farquharson was a perfect 3-for-3 on eight-meter attempts, helping UC Davis compile an 8-for-11 success rate for the night.
The Aggie win ends a six-game series win streak by Denver. The last UC Davis victory over the Pioneers had been an 11-9 triumph in the 2004 MPSF tournament.
The Aggies advance to Friday's semifinal, where they will face top-seeded Stanford at 6 p.m. A live video feed is available at www.ucdavisaggies.com or www.gostanford.com.
