STANFORD, Calif. - Senior Ramie Sprinkling had four birdies during a bogey-free first round on his way to a 4-under 66 at Stanford's U.S. Intercollegiate, leading the No. 28 UC Davis men's golf team into a tie for ninth after two rounds on Saturday.

Sprinkling followed his strong opening round with a 1-under 69 in the second and is tied with four other players for fourth place at 5-under. The quartet is five shots behind leader Tze Haung Choo of Washington who fired a pair of 65's to move to 10-under. He leads by one stroke.

UC Davis shot a 1-over 281 in Saturday's first round at the 6,742-yard Stanford Golf Course before shooting par in the afternoon. The Aggies, who are the top seed for the Big West Conference Championship which begin Monday in San Luis Obispo, are tied with league rival UC Irvine for ninth place.

Eighth-ranked Washington - one of six top-25 teams in the 54-hole event at Stanford - has an eight-shot lead over No. 2 Southern California heading into Sunday's final round after blitzing the course for rounds of 13-under 267 and 10-under 270 on Saturday.

USC is at 15-under and is followed by No. 21 Arizona State at -11, No. 15 UCLA at -10 and No. 5 Stanford at -9 in the top five. Seventeen teams are competing in the high-powered tournament. UC Davis and UC Irvine are three shots ahead of 11th-place Pepperdine and just two behind California and Oregon which are tied for seventh.

Sprinkling paced the Aggies on the first day as he bids for his fourth top-10 finish of the year. Brent Booth - who tied Austin Graham for team-low scoring honors in the second round with his 68 - is tied for 35th at par, Graham is tied for 44th at 2-over, Nate Pistacchio is tied for 53rd at 4-over and Tyler Raber is tied for 79th at 11-over.

Sprinkling is one of two UC Davis players with a pair of individual wins this year and he got off to a hot start on Saturday. He birdied two of his first seven holes, had two more over his final three and collected pars on the rest on his way to a first-round 66. Three birdies and two bogeys helped comprise his 69 in the afternoon.

Booth highlighted his 2-under in the second round with an eagle on the par-5, 542-yard No. 7 after posting a birdie on the par-3 fourth. Graham had five birdies in his second round, Pistacchio had four during a 69 in the morning and Raber carded five birdies for the day.

UC Davis will play with UC Irvine, Pepperdine and Oregon State during Sunday's final round which begins at 7:30 a.m.
