FRESNO, Calif. -- Junior Phil Huffman birdied four of his first 11 holes in the second round then later countered his only bogey with an eagle-2 on his last hole en route to a 5-under 67 and the 36-hole lead at the Fresno State Lexus Classic on Monday, helping the Aggie men's golf team to a share of first.

The No. 24 Aggies had back-to-back rounds of 4-over 292 on Monday at the par-72, 6,511-yard Belmont Country Club and are tied with No. 14 Washington at 8-under 584 heading into Tuesday's final round. The host Bulldogs are five shots off the pace in third while BYU is fourth in the 20-team event at 14-over.

Huffman, who has a two-shot lead over UC Irvine's Michael Im and Fresno State's Todd Angel, shot par in the first round and is at 5-under. His 67 tied his career-low.

Senior Ramie Sprinkling is also in the top 10, sitting in sixth place at 1-under 143 after opening the tournament with a 68. Nate Pistacchio, who is from Fresno, is tied for 36th at 6-over, Austin Graham is tied for 53rd and Tyler Raber is tied for 64th at 10 over.

Huffman, making his 2008-09 debut this week, got off to a blistering start during the afternoon round, posting birdies on a pair of par-5 holes and then consecutive par-4 holes at No. 16 and No. 17 to go four shots under par after just 11 holes. He bogeyed the par-4 3rd - the 15th hole of his round - before carding an eagle on his last hole, the par-4, 369-yard No. 6.

Sprinkling's start to his first round resembled Pistacchio's in the second. Sprinkling birdied five of his first 11 holes and then had a bogey and a birdie toward the end on his way to an impressive 68. He followed with a 75 in the afternoon.

Pistacchio had a solid round of 74 with a pair of birdies after shooting a 76 in the morning. Graham had a pair of 76's for his two scores while Raber had five birdies on the day including three in the first round when he shot 76.

Besides UC Davis and Washington, other ranked teams in the tournament include No. 38 San Diego State in fifth place and No. 9 Arizona State in 16th.

The Aggies will begin the final round on Tuesday at 9:40 a.m.
