March 28, 2009

Cal-Nevada Championships live results

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Jazz Trice had Saturday's fastest time in the 110-meter high hurdles at the Cal-Nevada Championships at UCLA and Sirena Williams did the same in the 100 hurdles, leading eight members of the UC Davis men's and women's track and field teams into Sunday's meet finals.

Both Aggie teams are in 12th through seven events.

Trice made his season debut in the hurdles during Saturday's competition, easily winning his heat in 14.05 seconds and posting the day's fastest time by nearly a half-second. The mark also earned him a berth to the NCAA Division I Region Championships in May for the second consecutive year after easily beating the 14.30 regional standard.

Williams, a regional qualifier last year, barely missed picking up one for this season but still had the best time during Saturday's prelims at 13.94 seconds. She was the only competitor to go under 14 seconds, doing so for the sixth time in her career. Williams' time was just .02 off the regional qualifying mark of 13.92..

Most events on the track during Saturday's competition, except for distance races, were prelims while all field events contested were finals. Ben Nelson tied his career-best in the high jump at 6 feet, 10.75 inches, scoring seven points for the UC Davis men with his third-place finish and earning another regional-qualifying mark for the Aggies.

Chidinma Onyewuenyi surpassed the 180-foot mark in the hammer throw for the second straight week, scoring six points for the Aggie women by taking fourth at 181-0. Brittany Bickel added four more points by placing sixth in the javelin at 131-09, a career-best by more than two feet and a mark that jumps her a spot into a tie for seventh all-time at UC Davis.

Allison Stoakley tallied the final point for the women with her ninth-place finish in the steeplechase. Her time of 10:57.31 was a PR by more than 17 seconds and jumped her from No. 4 to No. 2 on the program's career leaders' list.

Seven Aggie men qualified for Sunday's finals, including four in hurdle events. School-record holder Polly Gnepa had the third-fastest preliminary time in the high hurdles at 14.32 while Alex Wilright (52.42) and Thomas Phillips (52.83) had the second- and fifth-fastest times, respectively, in the 400 hurdles.

Gnepa - who had the fastest prelim time last year - and Wilright - the 2007 Cal-Nevada champion in the 400 hurdles - won their heats while Phillips was second in his. Phillips captured last year's Cal-Nevada title as UC Davis tries to win the event on Sunday for the third straight year.

Matt Council and Micah Grant both moved on in the open 400. Council was second in his heat in 48.42, qualifying with the No. 5 time, while Grant was eigthh in 48.55 for the eighth-fastest. Gavin Banks posted the remaining qualifying time, moving on in the 100 with his time of 10.82. He had the seventh-fastest time in the 33-competitor field and is one of three freshman to earn a spot in Sunday's final .

Williams is in the 100 hurdles final for the second consecutive season after placing sixth last season. She was the only member of the UC Davis women's team to qualify through preliminaries on Saturday. Jenny Gailey barely missed a spot in Sunday's 800 final with her time of 2:16,19 which was just .03 behind the final qualifier - Ejiro Okoro of Long Beach State.

Lauren Radke finished 11th in the pole vault but cleared 12-feet for the first time at 12-01.50 and moving her to No. 5 on the Aggies' all-time list.

Besides finals in 18 men's and women's track events - including all of the relays - finals will also best contested in the women's discus, triple jump, high jump and shot put, and the men's shot put, pole vault, triple jump and discus.

The Aggie men finished third at last year's Cal-Nevada Championships while the women took sixth.
