March 24, 2009

Final Stats

RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Freshman midfielder Chrissy Gutenberger scored a game-high five goals while two other Jasper players performed hat tricks to lead Manhattan College to a 14-10 victory over UC Davis in non-conference collegiate women's lacrosse action at Gaelic Park Tuesday afternoon.

The Aggies drop their sixth straight contest, falling to 2-8 for the season. The Jaspers, members of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, improve to 5-2 overall.

For UC Davis, senior Patrice Clark, junior Britt Farquharson and sophomores Christina Corsa and Jacklyn Taylor each tallied two goals. Junior Molly Lapolla recorded a career-high four assists to go with one goal.

Sophomores Phelicia VanOverbeke and Julia Lavelle each supplied three goals for Manhattan, which led 8-5 at halftime. VanOverbeke had a goal and assist in a run of five unanswered Jasper goals to start the game, then Gutenberger scored back-to-back goals in the 21st and 24th minutes to craft an 8-3 lead.

Lapolla assisted Gina Hoffmire and Farquharson on two goals within a span of 40 seconds to cut the deficit to three at the halftime break, then Corsa and Clark each scored early in the second to trim the Jasper advantage to 8-7. Clark later scored her second goal to put the scoreboard at 9-8 with 12:54 remaining in the second half, but VanOverbeke won the ensuing draw and immediately scored to ignite a 5-1 Manhattan run down the stretch.

UC Davis outshot its host by a 38-31 margin overall, and 21-10 in the second half. However, the Aggies shot just 1-for-8 on eight-meter opportunities, and succeeded on just 7 of 18 clear attempts through the midfield.

Besides her offensive contributions, Clark added three caused turnovers and a career-high six draw controls. Sophomore goalkeeper Alyssa Cranska, who relieved starter Kjersten Nordmeyer in the ninth minute, finished with seven saves and six ground balls in and around the crease.

The Aggies finish their Spring Break road trip with a game at Central Connecticut State on Thursday. Gametime from New Britain is 12:30 p.m. Eastern.
