Final Stats
DAVIS, Calif. - Freshman Samantha Stern scored five goals while senior Kristen Millar added three goals and five assists to help Vermont escape a late UC Davis comeback effort in a 20-12 win in non-conference collegiate women's lacrosse action at Aggie Stadium Wednesday evening.
The Aggies, playing in their first non-league contest, drop to 2-4 for the season. The Catamounts even their season record to 3-3.
Junior Britt Farquharson led UC Davis offensively with three goals and two assists. Sophomore Gina Hoffmire and senior Patrice Clark also scored hat tricks for the Aggies, while Christina Corsa and Molly Peterson each had two assists.
UC Davis fought back from a 9-4 halftime deficit, scoring five of the first seven goals in the second half to cut the UVM lead to 11-9 with 14:15 remaining. However, the Catamounts immediately capitalized of an Aggie yellow card with three power-play goals to bump their edge to 14-10, then scored four more unanswered goals to extend their lead to 18-10. Vermont won 15 of the 20 draws in the second half to help maintain its advantage.
In addition to her offensive contributions, Millar won six draw controls while recorded three caused turnovers and four ground balls defensively. Sophomore midfielder Megan MacDonald added five draw controls for UVM.
Hoffmire earned five draw controls for UC Davis, while Peterson provided three draw controls and three ground balls.
Both teams split up goalkeeping chores. Sophomore Alyssa Cranska posted nine saves for UC Davis before giving way to Kjersten Nordmeyer for the final six minutes. The Catamount cage was covered by freshman Olivia Hatfield and Laura Barber, who respectively notched three and four saves.
UC Davis continues its three-game homestand with a non-conference game against Robert Morris on Saturday. Game time from Aggie Stadium is 1 p.m.
