KOHALA COAST, Hawaii - >Senior Ramie Sprinkling shot a 1-over 73 while teammates Austin Graham and Nate Pistacchio each had 74's as the UC Davis men's golf team fired an 11-over 299 to place 10th after the first round of the Hawaii-Hilo Invitational on Wednesday.
The 17-team tournament, which features eight of Golfstat's top 50 ranked teams in the country, is being played at the par-72, 6,913-yard Mauna Lani Resort Golf's North Course.
Washington, which has two golfers among the top three places, opened with a 7-under 281 to assume a four-shot lead over Pac-10 rival Southern California and a six-shot advantage over Oregon. The Aggies are three shots back of ninth-place Arizona State (295) while leading host Hawaii-Hilo by one stroke.
Sprinkling, Graham and Pistacchio - each tournament medalists during the fall for the Aggies - paced UC Davis during the first of three shotgun rounds on the Big Island. Sprinkling shot a 37 on the course's front nine - tied with freshman
Tyler Raber for the team's best - and had a 36 over the back nine holes.
Pistacchio's 34 over the back nine holes was best for UC Davis with Sprinkling and Graham each carding 36's. Graham and Pistacchio are tied for 35th, Raber is tied for 63rd after shooting 78 and Booth is tied for 72nd after opening with a 79.
Hawaii-Hilo's Rodolfo Estrada, playing as an individual, shot a 6-under 66 to open a two-shot lead over Richard Lee of Washington and a three-shot advantage over two others. Sixteen players in the 100-competitor field broke par on Wednesday.
The tournament continues with the second round on Thursday beginning at 9:30 p.m. (PST).
