SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Ebonie Williams had a career-best six three-pointers and scored a game-high 23 points, Nicole Emery added 17 and host Seton Hall overcame a late nine-point deficit, as the Pirates posted a 58-54 nonconference women's basketball win over UC Davis on Monday, ending the Aggies' five-game winning streak.
UC Davis, which was led by a season-high 17 points from Haylee Donaghe and 15 from Heidi Heintz, fell to 7-4. Seton Hall captured its third straight game, improving to 8-4. Lauren Juric tallied 10 points for the Aggies, all in the second half, while making a pair of three-pointers.
The game was close most of the way with neither team able to forge a double-digit lead. It was tied nine times while the lead changed hands seven times. Howevever, the Aggies - who trailed by four points early in the second half after the game was tied 24-24 at the break - benefitted from Juric who had 10 straight for UC Davis over a span of 2 minutes, 29 seconds to help it go up 43-37. Juric had back-to-back three-pointers during the surge, then scored twice down low.
The Aggies built the lead to 48-39 with 8:12 left on a free throw from Samantha Meggison and were still up 52-43 with over five minutes to go before Seton Hall made its final push.
Shanai Heber scored six straight points to make it 52-49 before Williams hit her sixth three-pointer of the game to tie it with just over three minutes remaining. Four points from Emery and three turnovers by UC Davis helped the Pirates stretch their lead to 56-52, while two free throws from Kandice Green made it 58-52 with just eight seconds left.
No more than four points separated the Aggies and Pirates for most of the first half, but Heintz started a 7-0 run by UC Davis with four consecutive points, Donaghe added a three-point play and Heintz capped it with two more free throws to help UC Davis go up 24-19 with 3:08 left.
However, Emery responded with a jumper and Williams canned a trey to knot it at 24-24 which is where it went at halftime.
Williams was 6 of 10 from three-point territory, accounting for all of Seton Hall's treys. Emery was 7 of 15 from the field to help with her 17 points but no other Pirate had more than six points. Donaghe, who had 10 points in the Aggies' 60-55 win at Yale on Saturday, was 5 of 7 from the floor and a perfect 7 for 7 from the line. Only four players scored for UC Davis which shot 35 percent. Meggison had two three-pointers for the Aggies.
Seton Hall held a 38-30 advantage on the boards with Kandice Green grabbing eight. Heintz had six boards for the Aggies. Donaghe also had four steals.
UC Davis will take a break from action until returning to host Kansas State at 7 p.m. at The Pavilion on Dec. 29.
