LOS ANGELES - Sophomores Edgaras Asajavicuius and Charlie Horton each scored two goals as fifth-ranked Loyola Marymount rode a 5-0 start to an 8-4 win over UC Davis in Western Water Polo Association men's action at Burns Recreation and Aquatics Center Saturday afternoon.
The Aggies, ranked 12th nationally in Wednesday's coaches' poll, fall to 9-6. The Lions improve to 10-2.
Junior Carlos Martinez scored two goals for UC Davis, while Matt Richardson and Jim Breen each had one. Sophomore goalkeeper Kevin Peat had 11 saves, including seven after the halftime break.
LMU held its guests scoreless for nearly 18 full minutes, crafting a 4-0 lead at the halftime break then extended the edge to five goals on Horton's goal at the 6:08 mark in the third. Richardson broke the seal with a 6-on-5 goal on the next possession, then Martinez cut the deficit to 5-2 with two minutes left in the period. However, UC Davis never closed the gap to less than three for the remainder of the game.
Junior goalkeeper Andy Stevens recorded nine stops in front of the Lion cage.
The Aggies return to action on October 10 at the UCI Invitational, formerly known as the SoCal Invitational. UC Davis will open with No. 6 UC Santa Barbara then face either third-ranked Southern California or No. 18 Bucknell on Saturday afternoon.
