DAVIS, Calif. - The UC Davis men's basketball team has added Jelani Floyd to its roster, announced head coach Gary Stewart. Floyd is a 6-foot-8, 220-pound transfer from Chicago, Ill. The guard/forward is now practicing with the team and will be eligible to compete starting with the winter quarter of the 2009-10 season.
"We are very excited to have Jelani join our program. He will greatly improve our athleticism," said Stewart. "He is versatile and will be able to defend both backcourt and both frontcourt positions. He is an emerging offensive talent with a huge upside."
Floyd most recently attended Brown as a freshman in 2007-08 where he played two games for the Bears before missing the rest of the season due to an injury. Prior to that, he completed his prep career at Phillips Academy in Andover, Mass. He averaged 22 points, 11 rebounds and six assists per game as a senior in 2006-07. His season with Phillips also featured three triple-doubles.
"Jelani is a high academic achiever who possesses strong character, and his enrollment comes at a good time," added Stewart. "He is able to get acclimated both academically and athletically to UC Davis."
Floyd joins two other future Aggies who have committed to UC Davis. In November's early signing period, DeAndre Medlock (F, 6-11, 210, Fresno, Calif./Clovis West HS) and Ryan Sypkens (G, 6-3, 180, Elk Grove, Calif./Franklin HS) signed National Letters of Intent to join the Aggies next year.
UC Davis is next in action this Thursday when it continues Big West Conference play at Cal State Fullerton. The Aggies conclude the two-game road trip at UC Irvine on Saturday. The UCI game begins at 1:05 p.m. and will be televised on Comcast SportsNet California as well as FSN Prime Ticket.
