SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Sophomore Milos Golic scored three goals to help 10th-ranked UC Santa Barbara hang on to an early lead in a 7-5 win over 12th-ranked UC Davis in non-conference collegiate men's water polo action at Campus Pool Friday afternoon.
The Aggies slip to 2-3 for the year. The Gauchos, playing in their home opener, improve to 3-2.
Senior Adam Bennett led UC Davis with three goals, including two on advantage situations. Senior Danny Driscoll also scored a 6-on-5 goal while junior Brendan Sigourney tacked on his team's fifth goal in the fourth period. Redshirt freshman Kevin Pean manned the Aggie cage, recording seven saves.
Golic scored on a 6-on-5 chance early in the opening period, then teammate Miles Price hit the first of his two goals with less than two minutes remaining to put UCSB up by a 2-0 edge at the quarter break. Bennett broke the seal for the Aggies in the opening minute of the second period, but the Gauchos added two more to claim a 4-1 lead at halftime.
Price's second goal, a power-play score midway in the third period, hoisted UCSB to a 6-2 lead. Driscoll's goal late in the third and Bennett's 6-on-5 conversion early in the fourth cut the deficit to two, but the Aggies never approached any closer.
Gaucho junior Michael Robinson had nine saves, including a stop against a five-meter penalty shot in the final seconds of the third quarter.
UC Davis hosts its home opener against No. 11 Navy on September 19.
