DAVIS, Calif. - Senior attacker Brittany Aungier scored six goals while midfielder Alyse Kennedy had three goals and a game-high five assists, helping California escape from an early 7-6 deficit to a 21-10 win over UC Davis in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women's lacrosse game at Aggie Stadium Saturday afternoon.
The Aggies drop to 4-8 for the year and 0-3 in MPSF play. The Golden Bears improve to 8-5 overall and remain unbeaten in conference at 3-0.
Senior Katie McMahon scored four goals with an assist to lead UC Davis offensively. She also tallied five draw controls and a pair of steals. Senior Katie McGovern, sophomore Olivia Jarem and freshman Jacklyn Taylor each chipped in two goals for the Aggies. Senior Hilary Harkins posted nine saves in the UC Davis crease, eight after the halftime break.
Senior attacker Danni Zuralow had four goals and assist to aid in the Golden Bears' school-record scoring total. Junior goalkeeper Morgan Dyson entered the game in the sixth minute in relief of freshman Allie Shropshire. She earned the win, recording five saves against seven goals.
Although the Aggies took quick 2-0 lead behind eight-meter goals from Jarem and McGovern, Cal enjoyed a 5-0 run to craft a 6-3 edge after eight minutes of play. However, McMahon scored two goals with an assist in a 4-0 UC Davis rally that put the hosts up by a 7-6 margin at the 22:00 mark.
That advantage proved to be the final UC Davis lead, as Cal scored five of the last seven goals in the first half to enter halftime up by an 11-9 margin. Then the Golden Bears' transition game erupted in the second half as they outscored the Aggies, 10-1. Cal also tone down the physical play that resulted in UC Davis shooting 5-for-6 from the eight-meter arc in the first half. After 27 fouls before the break, the Bears only committed 11 in the second period.
Cal also outdrew UC Davis by an 11-1 edge in the second half, while allowing the Aggies to successfully clear the midfield just four out of 10 tries in those 30 minutes.
UC Davis returns to action on April 12 and 14 for non-conference road games at Cincinnati and Louisville.
