DENVER, Colo. - Junior attacker Steph Coyne scored three goals with three assists to lead 20th-ranked Denver to a 19-8 win over UC Davis in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women's lacrosse game at Barton Lacrosse Stadium Friday.
The Aggies fall to 5-10 overall and 0-4 in conference play. The Pioneers improve to 9-5 for the year and 2-0 against the MPSF.
Senior attacker Katie McMahon scored three goals and an assist to lead UC Davis, while freshman Jacklyn Taylor and sophomore Molly Lapolla each scored two goals. Taylor also led the Aggies with three draw controls. Senior goalie Hilary Harkins recorded nine saves to go with her three ground balls and three caused turnovers.
Besides Coyne's hat trick, six different DU players added two goals each. Senior Becky Childs and sophomore Katie Gold split up goalkeeping duties for the Pioneers, tallying three saves apiece.
Sophomore midfielder Lexi Sanders scored two goals in a 5-0 start for the Pioneers, then McMahon and sophomore Olivia Jarem both hit eight-meter attempts to cut the lead to 6-2. However, Coyne responded with back-to-back goals in the 14th and 16th minutes as Denver scored eight straight to finish the first half, entering the intermission with a 14-2 lead.
The Pioneers extended their edge to 18-2 after 11 minutes in the second period, then Lapolla had two scores within a span of 40 seconds to ignite a 6-0 UC Davis run down the game's final stretch.
The Aggies return home to host Saint Mary's in their regular-season finale before the MPSF Championship at California in early May.
