LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- UC Davis triple jumper Ray Green qualfied for the NCAA Division I West Region Track and Field Championships next month after posting a mark of 15.04 meters on Saturday at the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational at UCLA.
Green, a freshman from Ceres, had threatened the qualifying standard of 15 meters throughout the season, posting marks of 14.97, 14.98 and 14.99 meters in three earlier attempts before breaking through at UCLA. Green is the third member of the Aggie men's team to qualify for the program's first-ever Div. I regional, joining hurdler Polly Gnepa and discus thrower Matt Swarbrick.
Green's mark of 15.04 meters (49 feet, 4.25 inches) also moved him to the No. 10 position on the program's all-time leaders' list.
Green highlighted a day in which select UC Davis athletes competed in the invitational portion of the meet at UCLA. Most of the Aggies' contingent were in action on Friday, including sprinter Sirena Williams who went 14.06 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles to set a UC Davis school record.
On Saturday, Jah Bennett tied for second in the high jump with a season-best tying effort of 2.05 meters (6-08.75). Gnepa finished third in the 110 high hurdles in 14.30 and Swarbrick placed sixth in the discus at 52.10 meters (170-11).
Additionally, the 4x400 relay team of Micah Grant, Gnepa, Thomas Phillips and Andre Gaston was 10th in 3:16.16, also a seaon-best time.
The UC Davis women were represented by its two relays and triple jumper Jade Myles. Both relays posted season-best marks with the 4x100 relay squad of Stephanie Eckels, Nicole Theus, Mina Mohamadi and Ugo Eke finishing fifth in 46.58, and the 4x400 relay team of Willa Porter, Eckels, Kiara Reed and Ugo Eke placing third in 3:44.08.
Myles was the lone individual qualifier for the Aggies, finishing 10th at 11.80 meters (38-08.75).
The Aggies also sent a contingent of athletes to the Chico Twilight which concluded late Saturday night.
UC Davis women posted six runner-up finishes - including a pair by Alana Babers in the 100- and 200-meter sprints - while the Aggie men had pair as to help highlight performances at the meet.
Babers placed second in both the 100 (12.71 seconds) and 200 races (25.97) to pace UC Davis which also had runner-up showings from Gretchen Haussler in the 100 hurdles (15.15), Adriana Strack in the long jump (5.16m, 16 feet, 11.25 inches)), Kirsten Phillips in the hammer throw (44.89m, 147-3) and from its 4x400 relay.
The men's team picked up second-place performances from Will Baze in the long jump (6.78m, 22-03.00) and from Jared Yuen in the triple jump (13.69m, 44-11.00). Baze's mark was his season-best. Joseph Crummett placed third in the shot put with a mark of 15.58 meters (51-01.50), best for UC Davis this year.
The UC Davis teams combined to improve on 10 marks from earlier this season.
Altogether, the Aggie women had 10 top-four finishes at the meet while the men posted five.
