FRESNO, Calif. - Thomas Phillips won the 400-meter hurdles in 53.09 seconds to help lead the UC Davis men to a third-place finish on Saturday at the Cal-Nevada Track and Field Championships at Fresno State, while Lorin Scott's win in the 1500 helped the Aggie women take sixth at the high-powered meet.

The men, who scored 78.5 points to only finish behind UCLA and Fresno State among the 20 scoring teams, also received runner-up performances from sophomore Polly Gnepa (14.08) in the 110 high hurdles and Ray Green in the long jump (23-4.75) while also garnering a trio of fourth-place and two fifth-place showings.

Scott's win in the 1,500 came in 4:27.84, missing by just .04 a qualifying mark for the NCAA Div. I Regional Championships but moving her to No. 6 on the program's career leaders' list. The Aggies scored 57 points in the team race which was won by San Diego State. UCLA was second.

In addition to Scott, UC Davis received top-five placings from Jade Myles in the triple jump (39-6.50) and from the 4x100 relay (46.81) - both of them fourth - and from Ugo Eke in the 400 (56.16), Chidinma Onywuenyi in the shot put (43-7) and its 4x400 relay squad who were each fifth.

Phillips gave UC Davis a 400 hurdles champion for the second consecutive year and a men's winner for the third straight year after Gnepa won the high hurdles in 2006. Alex Wilright captured the long hurdles for UC Davis in 2007. Phillips' time puts him 10th all-time at UC Davis.

The Aggie men had 15 qualifying marks for finals during Friday's prelims and turned nine of the them into top-six placings with Green posting a pair. Besides his second-place in the long jump, the standout freshman was fourth in the triple jump, finishing at 14.87 meters (48-9.50).

Gnepa also earned a runner-up performance for UC Davis, crossing in a 14.08 seconds, just .02 of a second behind winner Thomas Ross of Cal State Northridge but improving his No. 3 all-time standing at UC Davis by .09 of a second. Gnepa's time also improved his regional qualifying time.

Jah Bennett and Matt Swarbrick each picked up fourths with Bennett going 2.05 meters (6-08.75) in the high jump and Swarbrick posting a mark of 54.24 meters (177-11) in the discus. Jonathan Peterson was fifth in the 1,500 (3:54.76) while the 4x400 relay (3:17.05) also was fifth.

The UC Davis women had 11 qualifying marks after Friday's preliminaries with Scott, Myles, Eke and Onyewuenyi turning them into top-five showings. The short relay squad of Stephanie Eckels, Nicole Theus, Willa Porter and Eke took fourth in 46.81 while the long relay of Porter, Eloyscia Ratliff, Kiara Reed and Eke was fifth in 3:48.17.

Sirena Williams, who had the second-fastest prelim time in the 100 hurdles, earned four points for the Aggies with her sixth-place time on Saturday in 14.70 while Allison Stoakley's seventh-place time of 11:17.41 in the steeplechase jumped her to No. 3 on the program's all-time ledgers.

Onyewuenyi had another mark affecting the Aggies' career list when she went 50.09 meters (164-4) in the hammer throw, moving her to the No. 4 position.

The Aggie women ended with 11 top-10 placings at the Cal-Nevada Championships. The men posted had 14.

UC Davis returns to action on Friday at the Stanford Invitational.
