Aggies Finish Strong In Comeback Win At Canisius

March 28, 2008

Box Score

BUFFALO, N.Y. - Freshman Jacklyn Taylor scored with less than four minutes remaining to help UC Davis complete its comeback from a 10-6 deficit toward a 13-11 win over Canisius in a non-conference women's collegiate lacrosse game at the Demske Sports Complex Friday afternoon.

The Aggies improve to 4-6 overall. The Golden Griffins drop to 5-5 for the year.

Senior attacker Katie McMahon led all scorers with four goals and a pair of assists, while senior midfielder Katie McGovern added three goals. Taylor and sophomore Olivia Jarem each had a pair of scores. Senior goalkeeper Hilary Harkins recorded 13 saves and scooped up five ground balls on defense.

Junior Chelsea Martinez led Canisius with three goals, while Brett Poissant chipped in two goals and an assist. Senior attacker Lauren Walsh posted a game-high four assists for the game.

Martinez scored back-to-back goals in a quick Griffin start to help her team establish a 5-2 lead in the first period. Jarem hit goals in the 14th and 25th minutes to cut the deficit to 5-4, a margin Canisius held with its 6-5 halftime lead. The Griffs exploded out of the gates in the second half, scoring three unanswered to take a 9-5 advantage. Aggie junior Patrice Clark and Martinez traded scores to put the CC lead at 10-6 after 41 minutes of play.

McMahon scored consecutive goals in the 43rd and 47th minutes, then assisted McGovern for a goal at the 48:12 mark to trim the deficit to a single goal. Junior Patrice Clark then won the ensuing draw and drove unassisted to the Griffin cage to tie the game at 10-10.

Neither team managed to find the net for nearly eight minutes of play. Harkins faced three Canisius shots in that span, stopping each of them. Her counterpart, freshman Allison Daley, had two saves in the scoreless stretch. Finally, in the 57th minutes, freshman Gina Hoffmire helped spoil a Griffin clear attempt. Taylor capitalized with an unassisted goal with 3:50 remaining in the period, putting the Aggies up by 11-10.

McGovern scored on an eight-meter attempt a minute later to provide UC Davis with a two-goal cushion. Poissant brought the Griffs to within a 12-11 deficit at the 58:38 mark, but Christina Corsa assisted Taylor on a goal a minute later to close out the victory.

In addition to her scoring output, McMahon also carded four draw controls and three caused turnovers. Jarem and McGovern also had three drawn controls, helping UC Davis hold an 11-3 edge in that category during the second half.

The Aggies complete their Spring Break trip with a game at Connecticut on Sunday.
