DAVIS, Calif. - Senior team captains Katie McMahon and Katie McGovern each scored four goals as UC Davis exploded from a 6-4 halftime edge to a 17-6 win over Long Island University in a non-conference collegiate women's lacrosse game at Aggie Stadium Monday afternoon.
The Aggies, finishing a six-game homestand that began back on February 27, improve to 3-5 for the year. The Blackbirds drop to 1-4 overall.
McMahon tacked on a pair of assists to go with her scoring output. Sophomore Molly Lapolla provided three goals and two assists, while freshman Christina Corsa had a 2-2-4 offensive line. Another sophomore, attacker Olivia Jarem, chipped in a goal and assist for UC Davis.
For Long Island, junior Allison Funk and sophomore Kristina Scheerer scored two goals. Goalkeeper Kimberly Bostick had nine saves, eight in the first half.
LIU briefly held a 2-1 lead after Christie Wienchowski and Funk each converted eight-meter shots in the first four minutes. Lapolla assisted freshman Laura Martin on a goal in the ninth minute then scored one of her own in the 12th to put UC Davis up by a 3-2 edge. Funk took advantage of a Wienchowski steal in the midfield to score the equalizer at the 11:17 mark, but McMahon scored twice in a span of 19 seconds to give the Aggies the lead for good.
The Aggies, who shot just 6-for-18 in the first half, scored five straight to start the second half in extending the lead to 11-4. They enjoyed another 5-0 run in the latter half of the period to seal the win. All 17 UC Davis field players saw action during the game, as did all three Aggie goalkeepers. After three saves in 46:36 of play, starting goalie Hilary Harkins gave way to freshman Alyssa Cranska. She then turned the cage duties over to Kjersten Nordmeyer, who made her collegiate debut by posting a save in the 58th minute.
Defensively, Aggie sophomore Molly Peterson tallied four caused turnovers with four ground balls. McMahon also compiled a solid overall statistical line, recording three steals and three draw controls to go with her offensive contributions.
UC Davis takes a break for final examinations then returns to action for a March 26-30 road trip at Le Moyne, Canisius and Connecticut.
