Owls Hang On Against Aggies In Lacrosse Win

March 13, 2008

Box Score

DAVIS, Calif. - Senior midfielder Whitney Richards scored six goals, including three in the first seven minutes of play, to lead Temple University to a 12-9 win over UC Davis in a non-conference women's lacrosse game at Aggie Stadium Thursday afternoon.

The Aggies fall to 2-5 for the year. The Owls improve to 3-2 overall.

Freshman Christina Corsa led UC Davis with four goals and an assist. Senior Katie McGovern added two goals while Katie McMahon chipped in a goal and two assists.

Richards completed her hat trick and supplied an assist to Britney Hoffman in Temple's opening 5-0 run. McMahon helped the Aggies fight back, recording an assist to McGovern then a goal of her own to cut the deficit to 5-2. Corsa brought the score to within two when she collected the next draw and advanced straight to the Owl cage just 38 seconds later.

Corsa scored her second goal at the 21:49 mark then converted an Olivia Jarem assist in the 23rd minute to bring UC Davis to within one goal. Richards struck again in the 26th minute to send the Temple lead to 7-5, but Corsa answered with an assist to Jarem, cutting the deficit back to a single goal. Berkley Summerlin won the subsequent draw and Richards found the back of the net yet again to send the Owls into the halftime break with an 8-6 edge.

After Hoffman and Corsa traded goals early in the second half, both teams engaged in a defensive battle for much of the period as the score froze at 9-7 for almost 13 minutes of play. Janell Myers and Berkley Summerlin hit back-to-back scores within a two-minute span to extend the Owl lead to 11-7. The Aggies never approached closer than a three-goal margin despite successful eight-meter shots by McGovern and freshman Laura Martin.

Senior goalkeeper Hilary Harkins had seven saves and four ground balls in defense of the Aggie cage while counterpart Bridget McMullan had five saves and a blocked pass for Temple.

This is the third straight game against a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation member for the Owls, who lost close battles with California and No. 16 Oregon at the East-West Challenge during the previous weekend.

UC Davis concludes its 20-day, six-game homestand on Monday against Long Island.
