DAVIS, Calif. - Senior co-captains Katie McMahon and Katie McGovern combined for 10 goals and four assists, leading UC Davis to a 16-14 win over Quinnipiac in a non-conference collegiate women's lacrosse game at Aggie Stadium Monday afternoon.
The Aggies win their second straight, improving to 2-4 for the year. The Bobcats suffer their first loss, falling to 2-1.
McGovern had two of her four goals in the span of 47 seconds in the first half, helping her team take a 7-3 lead at the midway point in the period. However, Quinnipiac struck back with four straight goals to tie the game at 7-7. McMahon hit two late scores - the second of which was assisted by McGovern - to send UC Davis into the break with a 9-7 edge.
McMahon scored her sixth goal of the game in the opening minute of the second half, eluding two Bobcat defenders then sending a backhanded shot into the net to extend the Aggie margin to 10-7. That proved to be UC Davis' largest lead of the game, as QU scored three of the next four to cut the deficit to 11-10. Freshman Jacklyn Taylor hit an 8-meter attempt to push UC Davis back up to a 12-10 lead, but Nicole Fiore, Katie Latonick and Kelly Calabrese scored in succession to provide the Bobcats with a 13-12 edge.
The Aggies equalized at the 51:52 mark in the game as McGovern collected a pass high in her offensive third, then successfully charged the QU cage. McGovern won the ensuing draw and UC Davis drew three separate free positions on attack. In the third such opportunity, Taylor elected not to take her eight-meter shot and instead flipped the ball to McGovern for the go-ahead goal.
Freshman Christina Corsa scored two goals in the final five minutes of play to help UC Davis protect the lead. Senior goalkeeper Hilary Harkins posted a key save and an interception to fend off a late Bobcat scoring chance. She finished with 13 saves, two caused turnovers and three ground balls in defense of the Aggie cage.
Juniors Tiffany Manzi and Ashley Valentine each finished with three goals to lead Quinnipiac. Taylor finished with one goal and one assist for UC Davis. She also won a total of six draws to lead all players.
The Aggies return to action on Thursday in a home non-conference tilt against Temple.
