UC Davis Finishes Second, Third At Big West Championships

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Junior Alex Arbios and sophomore Heidi Kucera hit NCAA consideration times and finished third in their respective events to lead the men's and women's swimming and diving teams on the final day of the Big West Championships at Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool Saturday. Senior Jill Olson also highlighted the final day of the event for UC Davis by tying the school record in the 100-yard freestyle.

The men scored 674 overall points to finish second behind UC Santa Barbara. The women's team jumped over Pacific to finish third overall wirh 610 points. The Gauchos also won the women's crown. This is the best finish for the Aggies since they began competing in the conference four years ago.

Arbios rounded out his successful run in the distance free events with a third-place time of 15:32.98 in the 1,650 free. The time was Arbios' second NCAA consideration time. He also finished third in the 1,000 free and second in the 500 free. Freshman Matt Herman finished right behind Arbios with a fourth-place time of 15:37.03.

Kucera also hit her second NCAA consideration time as she finished third in the 200 breaststroke in 2:16.87. She hit a consideration time on the second day in the 200 individual medley. Senior teammate Ashley Cayford finished fourth behind Kucera in the 200 breast (2:18.98).

Fellow senior Jill Olson finished her final collegiate swim meet with by tying the school record in the 100 freestyle with a time of 51.27. She finished fifth overall in the event. Freshman Amanda Holman was sixth.

Freshman Jamie Flynn earned her second third-place finish to lead the diving portion of the meet for the women's team. She scored 226.35 to match the finish she had on the high board yesterday. Senior Krysta Chaldekas completed her career with a fifth-place showing. Paul Navo was the top male Aggie diver, finishing fifth on the high board.

Senior Russell Taylor (200 breast), sophomore Daniel Donnelly (200 butterfly), freshman Jimmy Fong (200 back) and junior Trent Richardson (100 free) each made the championship finals in thier respective events and finished in the top seven. Junior Mary Struempf (200 fly) and senior Kathryn Jovino (1,650 free) each finished seventh in their respective event to lead the women's team.

Taylor and Richardson combined with Russ Underwood and Jason Kim in the 400 free relay and finished as runners-up with a time of 3:03.08. It was the best relay finish for the Aggies. The women's team finished fourth in the event (3:28.11).

This is the final competition of the season for the women's team. The men will compete at the American Short Course and Long Course meets on March 6-9. Arbios, Kucera and Cayford each reached NCAA consideration during the Big West Championships and may have the opportunity to compete at the Division I championships at the end of March.
