HOUSTON -- Freshman Austin Graham and junior Nate Pistacchio each shot 1-under 71's on Tuesday and UC Davis improved its team score for the second straight round with a 1-over 289 as the Aggies finished a close second at the Rice Intercollegiate at the Westwood Golf Club.

The runner-up finish at the 7,184-yard Westwood Golf Club was a season-high for the Aggies whose previous best finish was a season-opening fifth at the Kansas Invitational in September. UC Davis nearly made up a 17-shot deficit against Baylor after the first round, eventually finishing second by just two strokes.

It earned the second-place at Rice with a trio of top-15 finishes in the 63-player field. Junior Ramie Sprinkling shot a 3-over 219 after his 74 in the last round, tying his career-best finish with a tie for fourth. He also tied for fourth at the Alister McKenzie Invitational in October.

Graham had his best showing in his young Aggie career, tying for eighth at 4-over 220. Senior Matt Marshall, whose 73 on Wednesday marked his second straight improvement this week after opening with rounds of 75 and 74, was among a group of three golfers tying for 15th.

Pistacchio jumped 11 spots in the final round to tie for 27th, making his final run after firing a 71 on Wednesday, a nine-shot improvement over his second-round score. Sophomore Phil Huffman ended his tournament with a 77, tying for 34th at 229.

UC Davis rebounded from its opening 299 in which it was tied for fourth. It sliced seven shots off Baylor's lead, heading into the last round in third. From there, the Aggies made a final charge with their 289 - the second-lowest score of the day - to finish just two strokes behind the Bears at 16-over 880. Big West Conference rival Pacific was third at 884 while fourth-place Memphis was three shots behind the Tigers.

Amrith de Soysa of Louisiana Tech earned medalist honors at 1-over 217, winning by a stroke.

The Aggies are off until competing in the Callaway Golf Intercollegiate beginning March 10 in Rancho Santa Fe.
