No. 8 UCSD Takes WWPA Battle From No. 11 Aggies

DAVIS, Calif.-- Daniel Garcia scored a game-high four goals and No. 8 UC San Diego used four unanswered scores in the second half to earn a 9-6 victory over No. 11 UC Davis in a Western Water Polo Association game at Schaal Aquatics Center Friday night. Senior Adam Lindsay and sophomore Aaron Salit each scored two goals to lead the Aggies.

The loss is the Aggies' fourth straight and drops them to 9-14 overall while The Tritons improve to 17-9.

Garcia scored two goals in the second quarter and two more in the fourth to lead the Tritons' charge. A.J. Kotanjian and Steve Donohoe each tallied two scores for UC San Diego.

Salit and Lindsay led the Aggies with two goals apiece. Redshirt freshman Kevin Peat had a game-high seven saves in goal and to help shutout the Tritons in the first quarter.

The Aggies opened a 1-0 lead after a defensive first quarter behind Adam Lindsay's behind-the-back score from four meters out. UC Davis jumped ahead 2-0 with sophomore Walter Eggert's strike just 45 seconds into the second quarter.

Donohoe ended the Tritons' drought to cut the lead to 2-1, but UC Davis its two-goal lead just a couple minutes later with a goal from senior Danny Driscoll. UC San Diego got two unanswered goals from Garcia in the final minutes to tie the score at 3-3 at the half.

Salit put the Aggies up for the final time at 4-3 in the third quarter. Kotaanjian then scored back-to-back scores to give UC San Diego it's first lead of the contest. Another score from Adnan Jerkovic gave the Tritons three straight goals and lifted them to a 6-4 lead.

Garcia scored a 6-on-5 goal in the opening minute of the fourth quarter to give the Tritons four straigh goals and a 7-4 lead. Salit's second goal brought the score to 7-6, but Garcia struck again to put his team back up by three goals.

Lindsay scored his second goal with the man advantage with just under three minutes reaming to again make it a two-goal contest. Garcia struck again with exactly one minute remaining to make the final score 9-6.

UC Davis celebrates senior day at Schaal Aquatics Center on Sunday when they host UC Santa Cruz at noon.
