STOCKTON, Calif. -- Senior Nate Pistacchio, named last week as the Big West Golfer of the Month for October, continued his strong play on Monday with a 2-under 69 and a tie for second after the first round of the Stockton Sports Commission Pacific Invitational.
Pistacchio, who earned his honor after tying for first and eighth at a pair of tournaments last month, had four birdies on Monday to help UC Davis tie with host Pacific for eighth place after 18 holes. He had an early bogey but posted back-to-back birdies later on his front nine to help make the turn at 1-under. He was also one under on the back and is tied with three other players for second.
Pistacchio is one of three Aggies among the top 26 places after the first day. Brent Booth, who matched Pistacchio with four birdies, shot a 72 on the 6,757-yard Brookside Country Club course and is tied for 20th. Sophomore Austin Graham had an up-and-down round that featured five birdies on his way to a 73, tying him for 26th.
Senior Ramie Sprinkling started strong with birdies on his first two holes, carding a 76 for the day and tying him for 54th. Freshman Tyler Raber had a 78 and is in 59th place.
Fresno State, led by individual leader Grant Doverspike's 66, has a four-shot lead over Rice at 5-under 279. The Aggies and Pacific both carded 6-over 290's and are just three shots behind Sacramento State and Cal State Northridge who are each tied for sixth in the 12-team tournament.
UC Davis entered the tournament ranked 15th by Golfstat and 27th by Golfweek.
The tournament continues with 18 holes on each of Tuesday and Wednesday.
