DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis heads back out on the road this week for its second tournament in as many weeks as it takes part in the USA Basketball Classic in Mobile, Ala. The Aggies are one of four teams participating in the two-day tournament hosted by South Alabama. UC Davis opens the tournament Friday against Tulane and will face either South Alabama or Maine on Saturday. Fans can listen to the games at www.ucdavisaggies.com. The games will not be broadcast on the radio.
UC Davis (1-4) is coming off a 75-72 loss to Portland on Sunday in its home opener at The Pavilion. Kyle Brucculeri led four Aggies in double-figures with a season-high 17 points. Joe Harden scored 16 for the third straight game while Vince Oliver and Dominic Calegari finished with 13 and 10 points, respectively.
Harden continues to lead UC Davis with 15.6 points and 9.4 rebounds per game. The sophomore leads the Big West Conference in rebounding as well as minutes per game (35.8). He is fourth in scoring. Brucculeri is third in the Big West shooting .520 from beyond the arc. As a team, UC Davis leads the conference with 8.80 three-point field goals per game as well as a free throw percentage of .842.
Tulane enters the game with a 3-1 record after consecutive home wins over Nicholls State and Albany State. Kevin Sims leads the Green Wave with 15.5 points per game. Tulane posted a 17-15 record last year, including a 6-10 mark in Conference USA.
South Alabama began the week 2-2 and hosts Arkansas Wednesday night. The Jaguars are 1-0 at home with a season-opening win against Alcorn State. Their other win came against Florida A&M at the Billy Minardi Classic in Louisville, Ky. USA has suffered losses at Mississippi and at Louisville. South Alabama posted a 26-7 record in 2007-08, including a 16-2 mark in the Sun Belt Conference.
Maine heads to Mobile with a 3-2 record. The Black Bears opened with three straight wins against Northern Illinois, Kennesaw State and Princeton before falling to Providence and Quinnipiac. Maine went 7-23 a year ago and 3-13 in the America East.
Saturday's schedule features a consolation game followed by a championship game. Game times for both days are 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. (PST).
