No. 11 Aggies Protect Early Lead In WWPA Win

Six different Aggie players scored goals as No. 11 UC Davis rode a 5-0 start to a 6-5 victory over No. 16 Santa Clara in Western Water Polo Association men's action at Sullivan Aquatic Center Saturday afternoon.

The Aggies improve to 11-14 and 8-4 in conference play, virtually assuring themselves of a third seed at the WWPA Championship. The Broncos, who suffered their sixth straight loss, dip to 14-12 for the season.

For UC Davis, seniors Adam Bennett and Adam Lindsay, and sophomores Cory Lyle, Matt Richardson, Aaron Salit and Walter Eggert each tallied one goal. Goalkeeper Kevin Peat recorded 14 saves in the cage.

Senior Early scored two goals to lead SCU, while Liam Farrell, Mike Sorgenfrei and James Case each had one. Case's goal ended the Bronco scoring drought with 1:23 remaining in the first half.

The majority of SCU's scoring came on 6-on-5 chances: the Broncos scored four of their goals in such spots. UC Davis converted just two of seven man-up opportunities.

The Aggies now have defeated the Broncos in two of three meetings during the 2008 season, which should lock up the third seed in the WWPA tournament. Their three other losses were to defending champ Loyola Marymount (twice) and to UC San Diego, which should respectively claim the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds.

The conference championship will take place at Claremont McKenna from November 21-23. Seeds will be officially announced in the upcoming week.
