DAVIS, Calif. - Guard Genevieve Costello scored a game-high 18 points while junior Haylee Donaghe added 14 points and six steals as the UC Davis women's basketball picked upan 87-53 exhibition win at The Pavilion on Monday night.
The Aggies won their second exhibition game of the season and will now turn their attention to their season-opener on Friday night at Southern Utah. Sonoma State, a former NCAA Division II rival for UC Davis, was led by 13 points from Jaclyn Bisordi and 12 points from Olivia Larkin.
Paige Mintun and Samantha Meggison each added 10 points for the Aggies who shot 51 percent from the field and canned 10 three-pointers. Four players hit two treys each, a quartet that included Costello, Meggison, Kasey Riecks and Cortney French. UC Davis also had 17 steals with Riecks adding three.
The game was tied 2-2 but an early 16-1 surge by the Aggies gave them an 18-3 lead with 11 minutes, 20 seconds to play in the first half. The Seawolves got to within 11 on a pair of occassions over the next few minutes but behind 12 first-half points from Costello, UC Davis led 40-18 at intermission.
The Aggies gradually extended their advantage in the second half, leading by as many as 37 points inside the final five minutes while coasting to the win. They opened their exhibition season with an easy 118-44 win over the Australian Showtime last Thursday.
"I thought the exhibitions went very well in terms of what you're trying to get out of exhibitions which is to learn more about your team," said 12th-year head coach Sandy Simpson. "Tonight, Sonoma did a great job with their zone, making us work for shots and giving us different reads than we've had to make up to this point and it showed.
"We were a little rushed, now always as disciplined as we needed to be throughout the game and so it's a great game to learn from and hopefully shore up some deficiencies before we play on Friday," he added.
The Aggies held a 40-29 rebounding advantage, led by seven from Lisa Peterson. Vicky Deely added six. Costello added four assists for UC Davis.
UC Davis will open the regular season with two road games, facing Denver on Nov. 21 after facing Southern Utah this week. The home-opener is Nov. 25 against San Francisco.
