DAVIS, Calif. - The UC Davis women finished first and third in the final 400-yard freestyle relay, and also had the top three finishers in both 1-meter and 3-meter diving events to defeat Denver, 157-141, in a dual at Schaal Aquatics Center Saturday afternoon. The men's team won both relays and four individual events, but fell to the Pioneers by a score of 161-139.
The win improves the women's record in dual meets to 11-4 while the men snap a four-dual winning streak and are now 5-2.
Senior Krysta Chaldekas, freshman Jamie Flynn and junior Kendra Hughes finished in the top three spots in both diving competitions to help lead the Aggie women to a victory. Overall, the divers outscored Denver by a 32-4 margin. Chaldekas had the top score on the high board (246.53) and finished second on the low board (218.25). Flynn had opposite finishes, placing first in 1-meter (220.65) and second in 3-meter (237.60). Hughes was third in both events.
UC Davis led by just seven points heading into the final 400 free relay, but secured the win by scoring 14 points with first- and third-place finishes. The 'A' relay of seniors Melanie Covert and Ashley Cayford, junior Amber Bonds and freshman Amanda Holman won the event in 3:32.51.
The women also opened the meet with a 1-3 showing in the 200 medley relay. Cayford and Holman teamed with senior Jennifer Ginsberg and junior Mary Struempf to finish in 1:47.89. Cayford also won the 100 breaststroke (1:04.53). Covert led a 1-2 Aggie finish in the 100 free with a time of 53.14. She was followed by senior Jill Olson (53.17).
Sophomore Heidi Kucera had the best individual performance for UC Davis as she won the 200 breaststroke (2:19.37) and the 400 individual medley (4:28.36). Freshman Linda Hermann rounded out the Aggie event winners with a top time of 5:03.12 in the 500 free.
The men's team opened the day with a victory in the 200 medley relay behind the 'A' team of freshman Jimmy Fong, senior Russell Taylor, sophomore Daniel Donnelly and junior Evan Kraus (1:32.94). They ended the meet on a positive note as well, winning the 400 free relay in 3:06.56. That team consisted of Kraus, senior Nik Kemp, sophomore Russ Underwood and junior Jason Kim.
Freshman Matt Herman continued to perform well in the distance free events as he won the 1,650 free in 15:42.70. He was followed by fellow freshman Adam Borchard, who finished in 16:22.36.
Donnelly won the 200 butterfly (1:50.06), Taylor claimed the top spot in the 400 IM (4:06.35) and Underwood claimed the top spot in the 100 free (47.24) to cap the Aggie event winners. Kemp finished second to Underwood in the 100 free (27.29).
The Denver men held the advantage on the diving side of the competition with 1-2 finishes on both boards. Junior Adam Feight had the winning times in both competitions. Freshman Paul Navo was the top Aggie finisher, placing third each time.
The Aggies travel to Bakersfield tomorrow for a dual with the Roadrunners at 1 p.m.
