LAWRENCE, Kan. - Senior Matt Marshall fired a 2-under 70 in Tuesday's final round while the UC Davis men's golf team had a team score of 294 - the tournament's second-lowest of the day - as the Aggies leaped four spots to finish fifth at the Kansas Invitational, played at the 7.092-yard Alvamar Golf Club.
UC Davis, which was 14th after the first round and tied for ninth after 36 holes, used a strong finish in which none of its four scorers posted rounds above 75.
Houston had its second straight round of 292 and finished with a six-shot victory over Oral Roberts and host Kansas. Houston finished at 24-over 888. Kansas State finished fourth at 898, just four shots ahead of UC Davis which entered the day tied with Cleveland State.
The Aggies, though, used a strong round from Marshall who jumped from a tie for 21st place to a tie for sixth in the final standings at 4-over 220. He tied with Luke Joy of Drake. Marshall, a Division I All-Independent selection during his junior season, qualified for match play this summer at the U.S. Amateur Championship.
Junior Nate Pistacchio had a solid round for UC Davis as well, posting a 74 over the final 18 holes to finish in a tie for 37th at 227. The score was his lowest of the 54-hole tournament. Junior Ramie Sprinkling and freshman Austin Graham each had 75's on Tuesday with Sprinkling tying for 27th at 226 and Graham tying for 53rd at 231. Sophomore Phil Huffman posted an 80 and tied for 67th.
Redshirt freshman Kevin Fitzgerald, playing as an individual, carded a 78 in the final round and tied for 58th place at 232.
Jordan Irwin of Houston shot a 1-under 71 to beat Cole Howard of North Texas with a final-round total of 1-under 215.
UC Davis returns to the course on Oct. 1-2 at the Wahington Husky Invitational.
