UC Davis Rebounds Into Ninth At Kansas

LAWRENCE, Kan. - Ramie Sprinkling fired a par 72 during the second round of the Kansas Invitational on Monday afternoon as the UC Davis men's golf team jumped from 14th after the first round into a tie for ninth place after 36 holes.

The event, being contested at the 7.092-yard Alvamar Golf Club, is the season-opener for UC Davis which begins its first year in 2007-08 as an official member of NCAA Division I and the Big West Conference.

The Aggies, who shot 303 in the afternoon, opened with a 305 in the morning and are tied with Cleveland State for ninth at 32-over 608 heading into Tuesday's final round. Drake is just two shots ahead of UC Davis while three teams are only one shot back.

No team broke par after the first two rounds with host Kansas posting a five-shot lead over rival Kansas State. The Jayhawks, whose 292 in the second round tied Houston and UNC-Wilmington for the day's lowest, is at 14-over 590. Oral Roberts, UNC-Wilmington and Houston are each tied for third, six shots off the pace.

Sprinkling, a junior from Camarillo, posted 25 pars on Monday, tying for the second-most in the tournament. His 72 in the second round was the best round of the day for UC Davis which got a 1-over 73 from senior Matt Marshall in the first round. Sprinkling had a 79 in the morning round before dropping seven shots in the afternoon.

Marshall is tied for 21st at 6-over 150 while Sprinkling is tied for 29th at 151. Junior Nate Pistacchio had a 76 in the first round and is tied for 48th at 9 over, sophomore Phil Huffman had matching 77's and is tied for 52nd at 10 over, and freshman Austin Graham is tied for 62nd at 12 over par.

Redshirt freshman Kevin Fitzgerald, playing as an individual, is tied for 52nd, helped by a 76 in the afternoon which was the second-lowest score for an Aggie over those 18 holes.

Jordan Irwin of Houston had rounds of 74 and 70 and has a one-shot lead over three other golfers. The final round will be played on Tuesday morning.
