DAVIS, Calif. - Dayna Dumont's goal with just under four minutes to play in double overtime lifted UC Davis over Sacramento State, 3-2, Sunday in women's soccer action at Aggie Soccer Stadium. Earlier, Sacramento State forced overtime with a goal in the 89th minute. The win improves UC Davis to 4-2-0 on the year and keeps the Aggies a perfect 4-0 at home. The loss was the first of the season for the Hornets, who dropped to 3-1-1.
Dumont's game-winner started on a throw-in by Lauren Huntley on the right side. After a header by Gabina Bohlman, Dumont pushed in the loose ball past the keeper to clinch the victory. Marisa Boge and Rochelle VanBuskirk also had goals for UC Davis. The Aggies never trailed in the game but did see one-goal leads vanish on two occasions.
The game was scoreless past the midway point of the first half before the Aggies took their first lead in the 31st minute. That's when Boge connected for her first goal of the season. The sophomore was able to get in front of the defender on a pass from Dumont, creating a one-on-one with the keeper, and lifted a shot past the keeper.
The Aggies maintained the 1-0 lead until the 59th minute before the Hornets' Katie McCoy scored her fourth goal of the year to tie the score at 1-1.
It remained that way until VanBuskirk scored her second goal of the season in the 79th minute on an assist from Samantha Faber, giving UC Davis a 2-1 lead.
It appeared the Aggies would be able to protect their advantage in the final minutes of regulation before Amanda Gray's goal with 1:09 left in the second half tied the game at 2-2, setting up overtime.
"You have to give a lot of credit to Sacramento State," said UC Davis head coach MaryClaire Robinson. "They battled and pushed us and kept coming back. Frankly, they had some better chances to put it in the back of the net. The bottom line is we found a way to finish, and we found a way to win. That's the sign of a good team."
The Hornets outshot the Aggies, 16-13. Katelin Hopping led the visitors with six shots.
Dumont led the Aggies with five shots, and Faber finished with four. Megan Daws picked up the win in goal, posting two saves on the afternoon.
UC Davis is next in action Sept. 21 when it plays at Portland. Following that game, UC Davis will play its next five games at home.
