Aggies Land Eight On Golf, Tennis Independent Academic Teams

June 12, 2007

DAVIS, Calif. - It was announced today that UC Davis has a total of eight student-athletes from the men's and women's golf and tennis teams named the Division I Independent All-Academic Teams. Senior Louie Bishop represents the Aggies on the men's golf team while sophomore Kelsey Fischer was the women's golf representative. The women's tennis team had the most on the academic team as sophomores Jenna Kappel, Andrea Phillips, Emma Shapiro and senior Yuka Otaka were all honored. For the men's tennis team, junior Henri Landes and sophomore Daniel Elefant nabbed honors.

Bishop and Otaka are the only student-athletes of the group to garner multiple all-academic honors as this marks the second consecutive year they have earned the accolade. Bishop has received several prestigious postseason awards, which has included UC Davis' W.P Lindley Award for excellence in academics and PING All-America honorable mention.

Landes has the highest grade point average of all eight student-athletes as he boasts a 3.68 GPA as a history major.

The All-Academic Teams are selected by sports information directors from member institutions. Student-athletes are eligible for nomination if they have at least a 3.20 GPA and have reached sophomore athletic standing. This is the final year UC Davis will compete as a Division I independent as they will join the Big West Conference next season.
