UC Davis sophomore Douglas Roche won the 1,500-meter run in four minutes, 37.76 seconds to highlight his fourth-place decathlon score of 5,872 at the Chico Multi track and field meet at University Stadium Friday. Roche also picked up 746 points in his specialty, the pole vault, in aid of his final score.
Roche was one of three Aggies competing in the two-day meet meet. Freshman Brittany Bickel scored 1,380 second-day points to finish third in the heptathlon. Her final tally of 3,795 ranks ninth in school history and is the best hep score by a freshman since Monica Bednar scored 3,868 back in 1982. Bickel went 15-9.75 in the long jump for 511 points to highlight her Day 2.
Freshman Matthew Roberts joined Roche in the `A' flight, finishing ninth with a 4,967 total. Like Roche, his best second-day event was the pole vault: Roberts cleared 14-1.25 to amass 702 points in the decathlon's eighth event.
Chico State's Elle Cruikshank easily won the heptathlon with a final total of 4,490 points, winning all three Day 2 events. Lane Community College's Collin Cram scored 6,617 to win the `A' decathlon, well ahead of Chico State's Robert Nooney at 6,203.
In addition to the three current Aggies, UC Davis alumnus Dimitry Yakoushkin (formerly Vladimirov) placed eighth in the `A' decathlon with a 5,055-point total. Yakoushkin, a former Aggie hurdler in the late 1990s, returned to the sport last year after a five-year retirement.
The majority of the UC Davis teams launch the 2007 outdoor season with a quadrangular meet at Stanford on Saturday. USF and Fresno State will also join the Aggies at the Farm's Cobb Track and Angell Field.
