EUGENE, Ore. - Sophomore attacker Ilsa Van De Berg scored three goals while four of her teammates added two each as Oregon defeated UC Davis, 12-6, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women's lacrosse game at Papé Field Sunday. Aggie senior Megan O'Connor led her team with three goals and an assist in defeat.
Sunday's matchup represents the season opener for UC Davis, which drops to 0-1 overall and in conference play. The Ducks, fresh off an upset win over 16th-ranked Stanford, improves to 2-0 for the year.
Oregon scored four unanswered goals in the first 23 minutes before the Aggies could reach the scoreboard. O'Connor connected on an 8-meter shot at the 23:37 mark, then Van Den Berg answered with her second goal less than a minute later. The Ducks led at the halftime break by a 5-2 margin. Aggie goalkeeper Hilary Harkins posted 11 of her 19 saves before the break.
Oregon junior Kate Fleming score two goals in a 5-0 stretch during the first seven minutes of second-half play, pushing the Duck advantage to 10-2. The Aggies broke the spell when Eri Ichikawa and Erica Jue combined for a steal, then senior Alden Monger scored an unassisted strike at the 38:30 mark.
O'Connor scored the last two goals of the game in the 50th and 52nd minutes. She also recorded three ground balls and won two draws for UC Davis, which was outdrawn by a 15-5 margin. Harkins' total of 19 saves matches her career high, set against Stanford in last year's MPSF tournament.
The Aggies return to action for their home opener against Canisius on February 25. Gametime is 1 p.m. from Aggie Field.
