FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - Three UC Davis teams scored in the 400-yard freestyle relay during the final day of the Husky Invitational at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center Saturday night to help the Aggies finish eighth overall at the three-day tournament.
No. 21 Southern California won the women's team title with a point total of 1,369. Host Washington finished second with 1,225 points. UC Davis accumulated 342 points to finish eighth in the 12-team field.
Seniors Jill Olson and Melanie Covert, and freshmen Amanda Holman and Linda Hermann secured the best finish for UC Davis in the 400 free relay with a 10th-place time of 3:31.34. The Aggies also had two other teams score in the event with 11th and 15th-place finishes.
Sophomore Heidi Kucera had the best individual finish as her time of 2:22.07 in the 200 breaststroke placed her 12th. Two other Aggies also cracked the top 20 as freshman Rebecca Koch finished 15th in the 200 backstroke (2:07.54), and fellow freshman Tyler Ring had an 18th-place showing in the 1,650 free (17:47.58). Koch's time bettered her previous collegiate-best by almost two seconds.
Covert was the top Aggie finisher in the 100 free as her time of 52.70 marked a new team-high and bested her previous season-best by exactly two seconds. Junior Mary Struempf was the team's top finisher in the 200 butterfly (2:12.48).
The Aggies complete their stay in Federal Way, Wash. tomorrow as they will compete in a long course time trial for those student-athletes hoping to qualify for the Olympic trials. The event is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m.
