Pistacchio Paces Aggies In First Round At Pacific

Nov. 5, 2007

STOCKTON, Calif. - Junior Nate Pistacchio shot a 5-under par 67 during Monday's opening round of the Stockton Sports Commission Pacific Invitational leading three UC Davis players below par as the Aggies ended the first day of the event tied for third with top-ranked Charlotte.

In addition to Pistacchio's below-par score which has him tied for third, senior Matt Marshall had a 69 and is tied for ninth while freshman Austin Graham had a 70 and is tied for 22nd. Junior Ramie Sprinkling added a 72 and is tied for 44th while Brent Booth was solid with a 74 and is tied for 59th.

UC Davis ended the first of the tournament's three rounds with a 10-under team score of 278, tying with No. 1-ranked Charlotte which last month won The Prestige at PGA WEST co-hosted by UC Davis in Southern California. Kansas State fired a 15-under 273 to take the 18-hole team led by two strokes over Marquette.

The Aggies finished the day in front of two ranked teams in the 14-team event. Oregon, ranked No. 46, is tied for fifth with San Jose State, a shot behind UC Davis, while No. 44 Ohio State is tied for 88th at 6-under.

Pistacchio, whose previous best score this season was a 74, was 1-under on his first nine holes but blistered his last nine with five birdies including four straight covering the fourth through seventh holes. Marshall played a steady round with three birdies and 15 pars, posting birdies on two par-5 holes on the 6,777-yard course at Brookside Country Club.

Like Marshall, Graham played a bogey-free round, shooting par over his front nine before closing with birdies on the second and ninth holes. Sprinkling had the most eventful round for UC Davis on Monday, carding six birdies, three bogeys and a triple-bogey but still ended the round with a 72. Booth was 2-over on his opening nine holes before finishing at par over his back nine.

Nick Delio of Cal State Northridge and Stefan Wiedergruen of Charlotte each had a 66 to take a one-shot lead in the individual standings.

The tournament continues with 18 holes on Tuesday before finishing with 18 on Wednesday. The event is the final fall tournament of the season for UC Davis.
