FAIRFAX, Calif. -- Junior Ramie Sprinkling shot a career-best 5-under-par 66 in Monday's second and is tied for seventh at 8 under as the UC Davis men's golf team shot a team score of 20-under 548 and is tied for second after 36 holes at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational, hosted by Cal.
Sprinkling is one of four Aggies who finished the delay before par, a quartet that also includes freshman Austin Graham at 4 under 138, sophomore Phil Huffman at 139 and sophomore Brent Booth at 141. Senior Matt Marshall rebounded from an opening-round 76 to post a 3-under 68 in the afternoon and is just two shots over par.
UC Davis shot identical rounds of 10-under 274 over the 6,686-yard championship course at The Meadow Club and is tied for second place with No. 29 Louisville at 20 under. No.30 Washington has a seven-shot lead over the Cardinals and Aggies. The Aggies lead four teams in the standings ranked in the top 50. No. 25 Oregon State is in fourth, No. 31 San Diego State is in seventh, 47th-ranked UC Irvine is in eighth and No. 39 Arizona State and No. 38 Saint Mary's are tied for ninth. Sixteen teams are entered in the tournament.
Sprinkling's round of 66 included five birdies and nothing above par. He birdied three of his first four holes - the Aggies began each round on the 10th hole - and finished his first nine holes with a 3-under 33. Sprinkling's opening round of 68 included just one bogey to go with four birdies. Sprinkling is tied for seventh with two other golfers, six shots behind Daryl Fathauer who is at 14-under. Fathauer's day included an amazing 10-under 61 in the first round.
Graham, who had an eagle 3 on the par-5 13th hole during his second-round 71, carded six birdies on his way to a 67 in the morning. He's tied for 20th place in the 81-player field. Huffman is tied for 27th after posting a four-under round of 67 in his second round which included five biridies. He had three more biridies in his first round, ending the day at 3 under.
Booth opened the day strong, gaining birdies on two of his first three holes and made his turn at 1 under 35. He added two more birdies over the next three holes and finished with a 69. His 72 in the afternoon ended with eight pars over his last nine holes. Booth is tied for 36th at 1-under.
Marshall had a 76 in his first round but battled back in the second to pick up five birdies and post a 3 under 68. Marshall, the Aggies top finisher in each of the first two tournaments, is at 2-over 144 and tied for 56th.
Competition concludes on Tuesday morning with the final round. Following that round, UC Davis will turn its attention to The Prestige at PGA WEST, an annual tournament it co-hosts with Stanford at La Quinta, Calif.
