Berkeley, Calif. - All-American John Mann scored five goals and six other Cal players racked up two goals apiece as the No. 1 Golden Bears dominated No. 7 UC Davis, 4-19, at Spieker Aquatics Complex on Saturday morning. David Welch was the top scorer for the Aggies with two goals.
The win improves Cal's record to a perfect 4-0 while the Aggies drop to 3-2 on the season.
Cal shutout the Aggie's offense in the first quarter and jumped out to a 6-0 lead before UC Davis finally got on the board with a goal from Adam Bennett early in the second quarter. The Golden Bears would continue to overwhelm the Aggies defensively and only allowed one goal through the fist three periods. Cal continued to score at-will and eventually led 19-1 before two goals from Welch and one from Kevin Bacharach gave UC Davis a three-goal rally to end the game. Mike McGee finished the game with four saves.
"Cal looked like the No. 1 team in the nation today," said head coach Steve Doten. "The score is no indicator on how hard our team play today, though. I thought we played tough today."
The Aggies will look to regroup this weekend as they travel to Stanford to compete in the NorCal Tournament on Sept. 16-17.
