GREELEY, Colo. - Freshman Polly Gnepa won both hurdles races to help the UC Davis men's track and field team to a close second-place finish at the NCAA Division I Independent Championships at Northern Colorado Saturday. Gnepa finished the 110-meter high hurdles in 14.38 seconds then captured the 400 hurdles an hour later with a winning time of 54.43.

The Aggie men totalled 178.5 points, just behind champion North Dakota State at 189. The Bison women also won their title, compiling 262 points to runner-up UC Davis' sum of 134.

Gnepa had two of four Saturday titles for the UC Davis men. Redshirt freshman Tolulope Wusu won the long jump with a leap of 6.89 meters, or 22 feet, 7.25 inches. Matthew Swarbrick and Chris Chisam finished 1-2 in the discus throw. Swarbrick went 54.01m (177-2) while Chisam went 48.52m (159-2) in only his second meet in the event.

Danielle Green posted a personal-best 24.81 to tie NDSU's Heather Zander for the women's 200 title. Both runners beat meet favorite Mariama Salifu of Utah Valley State, who was third at 25.08. Green also posted an 11.93 in the women's 100, faster than her school record of 11.98 but aided by a 2.5 meter-per-second wind. Freshman Nicole Theus edged Green with a wind-aided time of 11.85.

Both Aggie 4x100 relay squads posted strong meets. The men's foursome of Scott Lee, Roland Chu, Polly Gnepa and Micah Grant finished second with a time of 41.28, a mark that ranks second in school history. The women's team of Willa Porter, Theus, Laura Rombach and Green won the independent title at 46.63.

This is UC Davis' second year at the D-I Independent Championships after hosting the event in 2005. The Aggies will join the Big West Conference in 2008.
