GREELEY, Colo. -- Chris Chisam and Shaun Countryman both scored substantial personal records to finish 1-2 in the men's javelin, highlighting the UC Davis men's team's second-place standing at the NCAA Division I Independent Track & Field Championships at Northern Colorado Friday.
Both the Aggie men and women are in second place heading into Saturday. The men have 52 points to trail leader North Dakota State by 20.5. The women are a distant second to the Bison, totalling 42 points to NDSU's 112.
Chisam fired a throw of 66.35 meters, or 217 feet, 8 inches, en route to the win. That beats his previous best by almost 16 feet and places him second all-time in school history. Countryman's best attempt was a 64.13m (210-5), almost a four-foot improvement over his previous PR.
Junior Jackie Turpin won the women's javelin, also setting a PR with a mark of 36.88m (121-0). The former basketball star had never thrown the implement until competing in the event against Sacramento State in early April.
Tyler Porter and Tolulope Wusu also picked up 10 team points as event winners for UC Davis. Porter hit a PR of 51.74m (169-9) to win the hammer throw by more than 20 feet, while Wusu's best triple jump mark was 14.81m (48-7.25), 20 inches ahead of his nearest competitor.
Other highlights included Gretchen Haussler, who had the meet's best prelim time of 12.14 in the 100 hurdles. That mark would set a school record if not for a aiding wind of 2.4 meters per second.
The Aggies advanced all three entrants in the women's 100 as redshirt freshman Nicole Theus ran a personal-best 12.03 to finish second in the prelims, Danielle Green won her heat at 12.16 and Laura Rombach was seventh at 12.48. Green and freshman Willa Porter also finished 2-3 among the 200 prelims to advance to Saturday's competition. Green crossed in 25.16, just six hundredths off her previous season-best mark.
Jessica Lorson led the two preliminary heats with a 1:04.06 to win the second section by more than a half-second. Sophomore Natalie Russell also advanced, finishing in 1:04.94. Freshman Micah Grant won his heat and finished second overall in the men's 200 prelims, hitting a PR of 21.46. It is the third-fastest mark in school history and the fastest since 1987.
This is the Aggies' second year at the independent championships, after hosting the meet in 2005.
