DAVIS, Calif. - In a meet decided by the final event of competition the UC Davis women overcame a 19-point deficit to defeat Sacramento State, 96-95, in the Causeway Classic collegiate dual track and field meet at the Woody Wilson Track Saturday. In the men's competition, the Aggies and Hornets each came away sharing a 96-96 tie.
This is the second-annual running of the meet between UC Davis and Sacramento State. Both men's and women's competitions were settled by the meet's final event, the 4x400-meter relays. In fact, the Aggie women never led in the meet heading into the final relay, trailing by a 39-23 margin after six events and as much as 19 points after 11 events.
The Hornets kept pace ahead of Jessica Lorson and Randalyn MAYA during the first half of the relay, although the two Aggies ran strong enough splits to set up Porter in the third leg. Porter caught up to her opponent on the back stretch of the relay's third leg, then Green won her matchup with Hornet anchor Keshinro Morinsola to lift the Aggies to the event and meet win.
The 4x400 relay capped a strong day for Green, who opened the day by anchoring a school-record 46.63 in the 4x100 relay. Green later won the 100 with another school record, a 12.03 that began UC Davis' comeback in the win. Redshirt freshman Nicole Theus also hit a personal record in that event, finishing second at 12.16. Green then added a win in the 200, posting a 25.24 despite a late-afternoon headwind.
Sacramento State and UC Davis stayed close throughout the men's competition, with the Hornets holding an 88-85 lead heading into the men's 3,000. The Aggies took the lead when Patrick Parsel and Jorge Murillo finished 1-2 in the 3K, crossing in 8:40.37 and 8:42.16 respectively. UC Davis, earning the event-maximum eight points in the event, held a 93-91 lead after that sweep.
The Hornets salvaged a tie thanks to the 4x400 relay. In an anchor leg that featured the top two finishers in the men's 800 earlier in the day, V.J. Blair passed up UC Davis freshman Ben Johnson at the final turn. Sacramento State compiled a winning time of 3:16.28 in the race, more than full second ahead of the Aggies' 3:17.23.
UC Davis senior Shaun Countryman kicked off the meet's drama in the day's first event when he fired the javelin 63.04 meters, or 206 feet, 10 inches, in his third attempt. Not only did that surpass the 205-7 that Hornet Chris Kirkwood fired in the first round, but it beat Countryman's own PR by more than six feet. Countryman's mark ranks second in school history and is the farthest throw since Mike Schmidt set the Aggie standard in 1987.
Freshman
Polly Gnepa was one of three double-winners for UC Davis, edging Sac State's Andre Wright in the 110 hurdles with his winning mark of 14.27. He also captured the 400 hurdles at 53.56, beating his previous best by almost two full seconds.
Junior Kim Beeson also won two events for the Aggie women. She collected five team points for her win in the 1,500, posting a 4:46.17 time. Beeson later led a 1-2-3 UC Davis finish in the 800 meters, crossing in 2:17.76 ahead of teammates Sarah Stacionis and Katie Marquis.
The Aggie women, considered 12-point underdogs according to the meet's seed marks, enjoyed a number of relatively unexpected wins. Sophomore Jade Myles unloaded for a school-record 12.41m (40-8.75) in the women's triple jump, breaking Angela Orlando's 1998 standard. Freshman Liz Cunningham earned her first collegiate win in the high jump, clearing the bar at 1.58m (5-2.25). Jackie Turpin, better known to Aggie fans as the point guard of the UC Davis women's basketball team, won the discus throw with a mark of 42.75 (140-3). Turpin has only trained as a collegiate thrower for three weeks, having joined the team after the conclusion of the basketball season.
Raphael McFarlane and Dave Nichols each won a pair of events for Sacramento State. McFarlane opened his long jump series with a 7.45m jump (24-5.5), then continued to pass his next five attempts as no competitor approached within a foot of his mark. He also led a 1-2-3 Hornet sweep in the 100 at 10.59. Nichols uncorked a shot put mark of 18.66m (61-2.75) and claimed victory in the discus throw at 51.48m (168-11).
The NCAA dual meet scoring format allows no more than two competitors from a team to score points. The event winner earns five points, with the next three finishers taking three, two and one point, respectively. In the relays, there are only two scoring finishers: the meet winner earns five points while the runner-up gets three. This is the first of dual meets on the 2006 UC Davis slate, as the Aggies will host Fresno State for a meet on April 29.
UC Davis returns to action at Cal's Brutus Hamilton Invitational on April 15.
