DAVIS, Calif. - Senior Tiffany Lee matched her career high of five goals while teammate Katie McMahon posted three goals and four assists, as UC Davis came from behind to scramble its way to a 13-12 win over Stony Brook in a rainy non-conference women's collegiate lacrosse game at Aggie Field Friday.
The Aggies improve to 6-5 for the season. The Seawolves drop to 5-4 overall.
Kaitlin Leggio led Stony Brook with four goals and an assist. She completed her hat trick with 9:57 remaining in the game to push her team ahead by an 11-10 margin, then won the ensuing draw and stormed the Aggie cage just 17 seconds later to bolster that lead to two goals.
UC Davis, which had trailed by an 8-5 margin late in the first half, responded immediately on Lee's fifth goal at the 52:50 mark. Jen Sanderson collected the draw after Leggio's score, then McMahon connected with Lee for the third time at the 50:44 mark. The Aggies took possession in the 52nd minute when goalkeeper Hilary Harkins scooped a Stony Brook turnover. After UC Davis successfully transitioned to the offensive end, McMahon drew a shooting space violation and converted her free-position attempt to tie the score at 12-12.
The Aggies had several chances to score the go-ahead goal after McMahon won the next draw. Tiffany Lee had her shot blocked in the 54th minute then, after McMahon's steal returned possession to UC Davis, an Alden Monger blast caromed off the Seawolf post and Patrice Clark's rebound missed left of frame. However, Clark was awarded a free-position shot in the 56th minute and connected on what proved to be the game-winner.
Harkins had two heroic plays in the final minutes to help the Aggies protect its lead. She intercepted an entry pass through the crease with just more than three minutes remaining, then posted a key save against SBU's Amy Taylor with less than a minute to go.
Clark finished the game with three goals. Monger and freshman Eri Ichikawa each added one for UC Davis. Taylor and Jill Gridley each recorded three goals for the Seawolves, while Carlee Buck had three assists. Taylor, who also had two assists, scored back-to-back goals midway in the first half to give SBU its first lead.
In all, the game featured seven ties and neither team led by more than two goals in the second half. The stronger breeze and heavier rainfall in the second half, helping the Aggies defend the south goal.
UC Davis returns to action on Monday, April 10 for a rescheduled Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game against Stanford. The Aggie-Cardinal matchup was originally for March 3, but was postponed due to unplayable field conditions.
