Aggies Brave Elements At Cal's Brutus Hamilton Meet

April 15, 2006

Results

BERKELEY, Calif. - Redshirt freshman Nicole Theus ran a wind-aided 12.00 to finish third in the women's 100-meter dash and junior Kim Beeson lopped more than two seconds off of her 800-meter personal best, highlighting UC Davis action in the cold and windy Brutus Hamilton Invitational track and field meet at Edwards Stadium Saturday. The ninth-annual meet, formerly known as the Golden Bear Invitational, was hosted by Cal.

Theus time surpasses the Aggie school record of 12.03 set by Danielle Green in the Causeway Classic dual meet just one week prior. However, with a wind of 2.7 meters per second, her time does not count as an official school mark. Theus' best wind-legal time is 12.16 seconds, also set against Sacramento State last week.

Beeson crossed the finish line in 2:15.15, more than two seconds faster than the 2:17.29 she ran at Arizona State on March 25.She has now run her team's eight fastest 800 times this season.

Freshman Polly Gnepa had the highest finish by any Aggie in the meet, placing second in the 110 high hurdles at 14.32. He continues his quest to break the school record of 14.02, set in 2002 by current UC Davis assistant coach Byron Talley. Sophomore Tolulope Wusu also finished second in the triple jump at 14.35m (47-1), although the event was only contested by three competitors.

Theus' performance represented one of five third-place finishes by Aggie competitors in Saturday's meet. Natalie Russell posted a 1:05.53 in the 400 hurdles, Chelsey mauck cleared 1.58 meters (5-feet, 2.25 inches) in the high jump, and Jade Myles narrowly missed her second 40-foot triple jump. She had a wind-aided leap of 12.18 meters, or 39-11.5. On the men's side, Geoff Casazza placed third in a five-man field in the 3,000 steeplechase, crossin in 9:49.82.

UC Davis returns home to host the Woody Wilson Classic as part of the campus's Picnic Day schedule on April 22.
