SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Sophomore Matt Muscara shot a team-best par 70 while teammate Louie Bishop tied for fifth in the individual standings at 1-under 209 after his 71 during Tuesday's final round as UC Davis completed the Wyoming Cowboy Classic in 13th place at Talking Stick North Course.
The Aggies finished the 54-hole event with a team score of 23-over 863, four strokes behind 10th-place Nebraska and five shots in front of 11th-place Kennesaw State. New Mexico State, which had the top two individuals in the 21-team tournament, finished at 4-under 836 to claim a three-shot victory over Western Kentucky. Arizona and New Mexico tied for third at 6-over while Southern Utah placed fifth one shot behind them.
Muscara had an opening-round 76 during Monday morning's opening round but rebounded to shoot 71 in the afternoon, leaving him tied for 60th heading into the final 18 holes. But Muscara, playing his fifth tournament this spring, had a season-best 70 in the final round to jump to a tie for 49th place at 7-over.
Bishop stayed near the top of the leaderboard after ending Monday's 36 holes at 2-under. He gave one shot back to par, carding a 71 on Monday, but he still challenged the front-runners by tying for fifth in the individual standings at 1-under.
Only eight golfers broke par for the two-day tournament, including New Mexico State's Danny Bowen and Ben Kreger, who tied for top honors at 5-under 205. Bowen took home first place, however, after a playoff. Nick Park of Arizona finished two shots back while Kenny Ebalo of Southern Utah placed fourth at 2-under. Bishop was part of a quartet of golfers that tied for fifth.
UC Davis posted a team-score of 7-over 287 on Tuesday - the same score it had in the opening round - utilizing strong scores from Muscara, Bishop and also Erik Hill. Hill tied his season-best with a 72 on Tuesday, tying for 85th in the final standings. Ramie Sprinkling had a 76 and tied for 66th while Nate Pistacchio tied for 70th after his second consecutive 74.
UC Davis returns to action this Saturday and Sunday with the U.S. Intercollegiate, being hosted by Stanford.
