FRESNO, Calif. - Freshman Polly Gnepa posted a winning time of 14.26 seconds in the men's 110-meter high hurdles while junior Gretchen Haussler finished second in the women's 100 hurdles, representing UC Davis' highest individual finishers at the Cal-Nevada State Track and Field Championships at Fresno State's Warmerdam Field Saturday.
As a team, the Aggie women placed fifth with a total of 80 points. UCLA handily won the meet at 182 points, with Cal State Northridge and Fresno State placing second and third with 122.5 and 112 points, respectively. The Bruin men won their half of the team competition by an even wider margin, totalling 246.5 points. The UC Davis men were seventh at 50 points. A total of 14 women's teams and 16 men's teams scored points in the two-day meet.
Haussler's finish was part of the Aggies' highest-scoring event. Her time of 14.45 led a trio of Aggies in the short hurdles. Freshman Sirena Williams was fourth at 14.63 and Chelsea Azevedo placed seventh at 14.98. Williams is just the eighth woman in school history to break the 15-second barrier in the event. That threesome accounted for 17 points in the meet.
Junior Danielle Green was the highest overall scorer for either UC Davis team. She led three Aggies in the women's 100 final, placing third at 12.29 despite a strong headwind. Green also finished fifth in the 200 with season-best time of 25.10. Additionally, she was a member of both of UC Davis relay squads. The Aggie 4x100 squad finished second at 46.85, well ahead of third-place Cal State Fullerton, and just 0.18 off the 2003 school record. The women's 4x400 team placed fourth at 3:49.12.
Other highlights included freshman Ben Johnson, who cut almost two full seconds off his previous 800-meter best, placing third at 1:53.16. Throwers Matthew Swarbrick and Shaun Countryman added fourth-place points in their respective events. Swarbrick went 50.84 meters, or 166 feet, 9 inches, in the discus throw. Countryman fired the javelin 60.47m, or 198-5.
Additionally, senior Chelsey mauck cleared 1.60m (5-3) in the high jump, and junior Abby Galloway matched that finish in the steeplechase, crossing in 11:21.97.
The UC Davis track and field teams return home to host Sacramento State in the second-annual Causeway Classic Dual on April 8.
