Results

FRESNO, Calif. - Jumper Tolulope Wusu, middle distance Kim Beeson, and sprinters Danielle Green and Willa Porter each advanced to two event finals to lead the UC Davis contingent on a wet and windy first day of action at the Cal-Nevada State Championships at Fresno State's Warmerdam Field Friday. A total of 18 Aggie athletes advanced to their respective finals, which will take place Saturday, April 1.

Green and Porter each finished among the top nine qualifiers in both the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash. Green second in her preliminary 100 heat and fourth overall with a time of 12.50, despite a strong headwind that affected the entire meet. She and Porter also placed fifth and seventh, respectively, in the 200.

Beeson finished seventh overall in the 800 at 2:18.00 and added a 4:45.72 time in the 1,500 to claim the ninth spot in the final. Wusu was the lone double-qualifer on the Aggie men's side, tying for seventh place in the long jump at 14.22 meters (46 feet, 8 inches) and sharing ninth place in the triple jump at 6.63m (21-9).

The UC Davis women will boast their strongest representation in the finals for the 100 meters and the 100 hurdles. In addition to Green and Porter, junior Laura Rombach placed ninth in the meet with a 12.77 time. Redshirt freshman Nicole Theus narrowly missed giving the Aggies a fourth entrant on Saturday, placing 10th in the prelims at 12.83. In the short hurdles, junior Gretchen Haussler placed second in the first heat and fourth overall with a 14.86 to advance. She will be joined by UC Davis freshmen Sirena Williams and Chelsea Azevedo, who placed fifth and eighth, respectively.

Senior Chelsey mauck was the highest finisher among the Aggie women, placing in a seven-way tie atop the standings with a 1.60-meter jump (5-3). True freshman Polly Gnepa had the UC Davis men's highest preliminary finish. He won the third heat of the 110 hurdles at 14.74, despite running into a 3.4 mps wind. Gnepa is seeded third in Saturday's final.

All of Friday's events were preliminaries for Saturday, save for the two 5,000-meter runs. The Aggie men scored a total of six points on the first day, getting a sixth-place finish from Jorge Murillo (15:16.37) and adding eighth-place points from sophomore K.C. Cody (15:22.73). The UC Davis women did not score points in the 5K.

The Cal-Nevada meet features collegiate teams of all levels, including members of the Pacific-10 Conference, Big West Conference and California Collegiate Athletic Association.
