FARMVILLE, Va. - Junior attacker Katie McMahon posted three goals with an assist while Katie McGovern and Megan O'Connor each scored twice, leading UC Davis to a 9-7 win over Longwood in a non-conference women's collegiate lacrosse game at Lancer Field Sunday.
The Aggies improve to 5-3 for the year, having won four straight games. The Lancers drop to 1-9 overall.
McMahon assisted McGovern on a score then hit back-to-back unassisted goals midway through the first half to help UC Davis transform an early 2-1 deficit to a 4-2 edge. After Lancer Cathleen Strain cut the lead to one goal in the 21st minute, McMahon completed her hat trick on a free-position opportunity. McGovern hit her second goal with less than a minute remaining in the first half, giving the Aggies a 6-3 advantage at the break.
UC Davis bumped its lead to five goals early in the second half. O'Connor scored within 34 seconds after the opening draw in the second half, then sophomore Kaitlin Moore found the back of the net at the 37:42 mark. However, Longwood senior Ali Shafer scored three goals as part of a 4-0 Lancer run that put the hosts within an 8-7 reach.
Neither team managed a goal for a span of nearly 12 minutes until O'Connor sealed the win with an unassisted score with 56 seconds remaining in the game.
Shafer led the Lancers with three goals, all in that second-half run. Bikowski added two goals, while junior Cathleen Strain and freshman Dee Warehime each scored one for Longwood.
This is the fourth straight year that the Aggies and Lancers have faced off including the 2004 season, when the teams held the top two spots in the national Division II rankings. In each case, the game was decided by two goals or less.
UC Davis returns to action on Tuesday at ninth-ranked Richmond. The Spiders, members of the Atlantic 10 Conference, representt the highest-ranked D-I opponent in Aggie history.
