TEMPE, Ariz. - Junior distance runner Chris Ferren-Cirino and redshirt freshman Tolulope Wusu each captured event wins to lead UC Davis' 30-athlete contingent at the Arizona State Invitational track and field meet Saturday evening. Ferren-Cirino crossed the finish line of the men's 3,000 meters with a personal-best time of eight minutes, 23.35 seconds to beat ASU's Casey Burchill by more than four seconds. Wusu's opening leap of 14.75 meters, or 48 feet, 4.75 inches, held up through six rounds of the men's triple jump.
Other highlights on the Aggie men's side included Shawn Countryman, who became the first UC Davis javelin thrower to break the 200-foot barrier in more than a decade. His opening mark of 61.18 meters (200-9) was good for fifth place in the meet, two places ahead of teammate Chris Chisam, who fired a 60.24 (197-8) in his third attempt.
Saturday's meet also was a rare appearance for senior Joel Bosserman, who tied for sixth place in the 800 meters at 1:55.23. Due to his devout Jewish faith, Bosserman is unable to compete in most collegiate track meets, which usually operate during Saturdays. However, the ASU meet is one of the rare events on the Aggie schedule in which many running events started after sundown.
Junior Danielle Green enjoyed a busy but solid evening for the Aggie women. She finished fifth in the 100 meters at 12.16, seventh in the 200 at 25.16, and anchored both UC Davis relays. Each of her two sprint times represent season-best marks, and her 100 time is just off her PR of 12.12, set late in the 2005 season. Sophomore Jade Myles had the highest finishes by an Aggie female athlete. She placed fourth in the long jump with a wind-aided 5.55 (18-2.5) effort, then matched that finish in the triple jump, posting a 11.49 (37-8.5) leap.
Junior Gretchen Haussler and freshman Chelsea Azevedo continue to provide UC Davis with a strong tandem in the short hurdles. Haussler placed fifth with a time of 14.39 in the 100 hurdles, while Azevedo improved her season-best mark to 14.87, good for seventh in the meet.
Ferren-Cirino led what could have been a 1-2 finish for UC Davis. Sophomore Patrick Parsel trailed close behind for almost the entire race before an injury forced him to pull out of the race with a lap remaining.
The Aggies sent a total of 30 athletes to the ASU Invite, while the balance of the track and field roster stayed in the area to compete at Sacramento State's Hornet Invitational on Saturday. UC Davis will again split up its squad next weekend, competing in the Cal-Nevada State Championships and Stanford Invitational meets.
