RANCHO SANTE FE, Calif. -- Ramie Sprinkling shot an even-par 72 in Tuesday's final round, UC Davis' lowest score of the day, as the Aggies shot matching scores of 309 in the second and third rounds to finish 11th at the 2006 Calloway Golf Invitational, hosted by the University of San Diego.
UC Davis, which was tied for fifth after Monday's first round, completed the second round Tuesday morning - suspended by darkness on Monday - in ninth place before slipping to 11th in the final standings. The Aggies finished 53-over par on the par 72, 6,911-yard course at The Farms Golf Club.
San Diego State led wire-to-wire, posting a 12-shot victory with a 16-over par score of 880. Host San Diego was second at 892, followed by San Jose State and Loyola Marymount, which were each seven shots behind the Toreros at 35-over. UC Davis was just four shots back of ninth place Colorado State and UC Santa Barbara, and four strokes in front of 12th-place Hawaii.
Jason D'Amaore of Loyola Marymount opened the tournament on Monday with a 6-under 66 and used that low score to springboard to a five-shot win over Andrew Scott of San Diego State. D'Amore finished at 7-under, Scott was second at 2-under and Bucky Coe of San Diego was third at 2-over.
Sprinkling's 72 was the best UC Davis score of the day and seven shots better than he posted in the second round. Sprinkling finished tied for 26th place at 11-over 227. Louie Bishop, who had a 1-under 71 in the first round, was the top Aggie finisher overall, tying for 16th at 8-over 224. He had a 74 in the second round to highlight his day.
Nate Pistacchio and Matt Muscara each shot 79 over the final 18 holes, both tying for 48th place at 236 while Erik Hill tied for 57th at 239.
UC Davis will take a break for final exams, returning to competition on Mar. 27-28 at the Duck Invitational, hosted by the University of Oregon.
